Keyword Research/Hijacking

Keyword research happens to always have new information popping up on the Internet. So what works and what is effective? There are many different methods people are trying to teach you and you've probably tried out many of them with zero success. There aren't many steps you need to take to get through keyword research, but to find the best keywords you need to know how to do it.

It is vital to do some research on your keywords. Now this is not something you do once, you should actually do keyword research every quarter because some keywords may be converting now, but in a few months they could be doing absolutely nothing.

Here are a few steps that you should consider to get the right keywords for your business:

  1. Firefox has many plugins for SEO and Keyword Research available. They will make researching much easier for you.

  2. Download the MSN AdCenter add-in (free download from Microsoft).

  3. If you currently have a site, go through your log files to see what key phrases are converting.

  4. Have modifiers alongside your keywords. This means use words such as: buy, discount, wholesale, accessories, etc. This will allow you to expand your keyword list.

  5. Make use of the third-party research tools including KeyCompete.com, WordTracker.com, SpyFu, and Keyword Discovery.

Many marketers feel that they know what key phrases are going to convert, but in all honesty they don't know without testing and researching. Markets change on a regular basis without any notice, so being able to expect the unexpected can put you ahead of the game. Knowing what your visitors do once they get to your site may be quite beneficial so take the time to run a PPC campaign to find out what they are doing. Let me show you how:

  1. Develop accounts with Google AdWords, Yahoo! Search Marketing, and MSN adCenter.

  2. Import all your keywords that you are using

  3. Generate titles and descriptions that match the ones you've utilized on your pages.

  4. Place a bid for the #1 listing and if you want to, have a small budget do a test for less than $250.00, but if you have the funds don't place a limit and get all your keywords on the first page.

  5. Use the exact and broad match but be careful when you use broad match key phrases because these could drain your funds rapidly.

  6. Have the campaign run for a few days, usually by running your campaign for two days you'll see quality results.

  7. Analyze your results to see where you stand.

There may be a large amount of competition for certain terms; so when you first start focus on a few keywords that are less competitive until your sales start coming in so you can realistically compete.

Keywords can take a lot of time so be wise, do the research, test things out and then decide.
